Weekend Update

You know the weekends are getting rough when you start really looking forward to Mondays.

I am so f’n tired from studying, I want to just crawl back into bed for a week. I only have a few more weeks to go, but I am really starting to feel the pressure. Sleep is no longer restful, as I am dreaming of equations again. I am so on edge when I wake up that the ability to think rationally is no longer an option until at least 10am.

At 5am this morning, I was woken up by what sounded like my front door handle rattling as if someone was trying to get in the house. I crawled over Cody (who, of course, is completely unfazed by ANY noise other than that of a doughnut bag being opened 27 miles away) jumped out of bed, grabbed the lead pipe under my bed and went running down the stairs, ready, willing and able to crack open the skull of whomever was on the other side of the door. How dare they wake me up at that hour to rob the place. If you want something, at least wait until 7am, when I’ve had a cup of coffee.

Fortunately, no one was there. Deb got up and helped me search around the house just in case my future victim was hiding behind the furniture. No such luck. We went back upstairs, and Deb had an idea – she went into the guest room and rattled her closet door. That was the exact noise.

We put 2 + 2 together and figured out that in front of the closet door is Phoebe’s favorite spot to sleep, and apparently, that tubby little bitch must have been leaning against the door and started licking her fat little ass, thus rattling the door and doorknob. I remembered that as I jumped out of bed to run down the stairs, she had run just ahead of me. At first I thought it was because she also heard someone at the front door. On hindsight, she’s not one to miss a meal, and was probably just hoping that I was on my way to go and feed her breakfast. At least she didn’t trip me this time, and send me flying down a flight of stairs on my ass like she did last year.

All in all, the weekend wasn’t a total Snoozefest. I did manage to get some tickets for Tanglewood for this summer – we’re going to see Josh Groban perform with John Williams and the Boston Pops. Hopefully, I’ll be going up for the jazz fest, too.

I did decide that in order to spend some quality time with my wife, I have to give up some of my usual summertime activities. So, I’m giving up rowing for the summer. I usually did this 4 mornings a week. I don’t think it’s possible for me to get up at 5am and row until 7.30am, go to work, go sailing, play softball, ride the motorcycle, spend 20 hours a week doing research and see my wife. I’ll also probably give up a sailing race or 2, as well. Maybe even a softball game or two. I’m actually thinking this is most likely my last year playing softball. I’ve been playing for almost 30 years, and it’s just about time to hang up the glove, bat and cleats. It’s not an age thing, though. I’m hoping I’ll be too busy in med school next summer to be doing anything other than sticking my nose on a book or hands in a cadaver…

We also have a lot of plans to be gone visiting friends here and there, and having friends over a lot, so time alone in my house is going to be rare.

But that’s a typical summer… and most likely, the last one in which I’ll actually have free time … at least for the next 11 years.
