After a 15-minute summer, southern New England crashed head first into autumn. The cold. The rain. The hellish drivers and massive construction on I-95. They all returned.
Despite my incessant bitching and moaning about the Nightmare Northeast, I’ve always maintained that there is 1 nice thing about autumn in New England: its brilliant fall foliage season.
Last week, we finally started to see signs of color. There was still a lot of green for early October, but a spectacular display of bright oranges, fiery reds, and golden yellows were beginning to emerge. I was looking forward to taking a nice long motorcycle ride upstate to enjoy the view this coming weekend -- it is Fall Foliage Weekend -- as the colors should have been peaking.
However.
In atypical fashion, we had 50-60 mph winds all day yesterday, and now I think there’s ½ a leaf left on each tree.
Have I mentioned lately how much this place sucks?
In other news, thanks so much to everyone who e-mailed or left comments about Phoebe, aka Phebes of Thebes and Pudge Rocket. Your thoughts and sentiments were touching.
I only had her for a year and a half, but in that time we really bonded. She helped me study for the MCAT by keeping me company, sitting in my lap every night for 5 months, and dutifully reminded me every morning that my coffee was in need of a warming up by dipping her paw in to test the temperature.
I really missed that this morning ...
And finally, tune in tonight on Fox to watch the Yankees crush the hopes of Red Sox fans worldwide. Especially San Francisco Giants fans who live in Palm Springs and now root for the Red Sox because all that heat has been getting to them. :)
