This Week's Project: Web Cams

I've been researching webcams tonight - not for your viewing pleasure, but mine. Specifically, I want to be able to chat via real-time video with the wife and family back home while I am across the continent. It's been a few years since I was a tech reviews editor (in a former life I worked for Ziff Davis/ZDNET) -- and I felt so out of the loop on current Internet/PC technology. But a quick 30 minutes on CNET has brought me up to speed.

I'm thinking I want to go with an instant messenger utility that incorporates video. Right now I use Trillian, and would need to upgrade to the Pro version, plus buy 2 or 3 webcams and the necessary software. Anyone have any experience here? If so, comment away. I trust the folks at ZDNET/CNET, but I'm always open to more personal experiences.

Of course, if I am feeling daring down the road, I'll incorporate the webcam into my web site... because I know how exciting the thought of watching me read Gray's Anatomy in my scrubs, while lounging in my sparsely decorated apartment can be.

Hey! I've got the Mac iSight webcam (thanks to my wife!) that I need to set up. You getting a web cam will definitely make your move a bit easier on us, at least we'll be able to see you--even if it is slumped over a pile of medical books!

I haven't tried it myself, but I have heard great things about the simplicity of the iSight. but yes, you have to have a Mac.

I think Skype, the internet-based VoIP phone just announced video support as well. that will probably work with any standard USB-based Web came you'd plug into your computer, I would think. Logitech probably still sells a bunch.
